Academy stresses
fun, teamwork for the next scientists
About 150 middle and high school students began a
two-week academy Monday at Fresno State designed to
demonstrate that bridge construction, math, electronics
and even statistics can be fun.
The competitive highlight challenged two-student teams
to build the highest tower from 8- by 11-inch pieces of
paper, toothpicks, frozen juice sticks, rubber bands,
paper clips and plastic straws.

District
negotiates to keep Buster through December
Fresno Unified School District trustees announced
Saturday that they will begin contract negotiations with
interim Superintendent Walt Buster to keep him in that
job through the end of December.
Buster, who said he doesn't want the permanent
superintendent post, volunteered through Aug. 31, after
Santiago Wood resigned July 1.
"We want to extend the continuity of our leadership at
this time," said board President Patricia Barr, after a
special closed-door meeting Saturday. It was the first

Math, science
studies urged
A growing awareness that a lack of qualified math and
science students is putting California and the nation at
a disadvantage has Fresno State and other campuses
taking extra steps to attract and nurture young people
who want to enter those fields.
These efforts draw increasing private and industry
support, which has become crucial as the state reduces
funding to colleges. Educators say a large part of the
problem lies in the education students receive well
before college.
